Duckpond House Concert No. 50
Jarabi Trio
28 October 2023

Jonni and I first saw Jarabi Trio in a basement in an old mansion in St Kilda
at a concert run by Alliance Francaise when the whole night was conducted in French.
As a result, we missed out on all the anecdotes and stories, but we didn't miss out on
the wonderful music that they played. So, we decided to get them to play at
The Duckpond to once again hear the music and maybe this time get the stories.

Mohamed Camara, originally from Guinea, West Africa, is a gifted singer
and accompanies himself on djembe and kora, a West African harp.
Joining Mohamed in Jarabi Trio is his wife Anna, who is an award winning percussionist.
Anna delighted us with some wonderful playing on the balafon, a gourd-resonated xylophone
.

Completing the trio is Tom Rouch, who is a fine guitarist.
Tom particularly impressed everyone with some terrific playing
on an extended, and quite unexpected, blues number.

With Mohamed's distinctly rich vocals and a vibrant mix of tradional
and contemporary music, Jarabi Trio were enthusiastically recieved,
and even got some of our not so young audience up dancing.

Mohamed has played drums since childhood and is now considered a master drummer,
which he clearly demonstrated on both djembe and dun dun.
